about.

Life360 is a family safety app built around real-time location tracking and emergency alerts. For this conceptual redesign, I used Value Sensitive Design (VSD) to explore how the app could support safety without relying so heavily on constant monitoring.

research.

I started with stakeholder analysis, focusing on parents/guardians and caregivers, then used value hierarchy charts to translate values like security, reliability, protection, and well-being into more specific design requirements. I validated those assumptions through academic research, policy and legal documents, user reviews, and informal conversations with people who use location-sharing apps.

challenge.

The research showed that Life360’s challenge was not a lack of safety features, but the trade-offs created by them. The key tensions were security vs. autonomy and protection vs. privacy and dignity, while inaccurate alerts also raised concerns around reliability and trust.

iteration.

My first prototype focused on improving the emergency response flow, with crash detection, responder updates, family alerts, and an incident timeline. It felt like the most direct way to respond to the safety and reliability needs I found in my research.

After feedback, I realized the concept was still too reactive. It only improved what happened after an emergency had already started. It didn’t touch the actual tension my research kept surfacing: constant, always-on visibility is what creates the safety-versus-autonomy problem in the first place. A better incident timeline doesn’t change anything about how it feels to be watched all day, every day.

So I moved the final design upstream. Instead of just reacting to incidents, the system learns what “normal” looks like, flags unusual behavior, explains why it was flagged, and only escalates when needed. The goal shifted from reacting faster to needing to react less often.

result.

The final redesign shifts Life360 from reactive emergency response to behavior-based safety monitoring that identifies unusual activity earlier. The system focuses on making monitoring more transparent, explainable, and intentional.
